Worthy

  • Worthy- A Journey Through Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:1
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.”
Our calling must shape our conduct, not just our convictions.

    The heart behind this series:
  • Know who you are in Christ.
  • Walk in what He has called you to.
  • Live differently.
  • Stand firm.

There is something significant in this letter for us as a church, particularly in the season we find ourselves in. We have spoken a great deal about faith, courage, obedience, revival and the harvest. We believe Jesus is calling us into more.
But as we move forward, we must ask an important question:
What does this life look like?
What does it mean to faithfully walk in everything Jesus has called us to?
Ephesians brings us back to the foundation.
    • Before we talk about what we are called to do, we must understand who we are in Christ.
    • Before we talk about where we are going, we must understand what Jesus has already done.
    • Before we talk about our mission, we must understand our identity.
    • Before we call people to live differently, we must remind them of the grace that has made them new.

Ephesians is not simply about personal Christian growth.
It is about Jesus building His Church into a people who reflect His character, display His glory and participate in His purposes.

LIFE GROUP NOTES: KNOW

This weekend we began our new series, ‘Worthy’. Here is what we can cover in Life Group.

“Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you…”

Ephesians 1:18

Know who you are in Christ

This weekend be began our new series, ‘Worthy’, anchoring in the book of Ephesians, and wanting to live out Ephesians 4:1, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called… .” The heart through this series is for us to know who we are in Christ. Walk in what He has called us to, live differently, stand firm. Ephesians brings us back to the foundation. Before we talk about what we are called to do, we must understand who we are in Christ. Before we talk about where we are going, we must understand what Jesus has already done. Before we talk about our mission, we must understand our identity. Before we call people to live differently, we must remind them of the grace that has made them new.

For week 1, we looked through Ephesians 1-3. Paul begins Ephesians not with commands, but with worship. He wants the church to understand the extraordinary grace of God. Before he tells them how to live, he reminds them of everything God has done for them in Christ. This is foundational.

We need to know what Jesus has done for us. In Christ we are chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven and blessed with every spiritual blessing. Our identity is rooted in His grace, not our achievements. We need to know the power of Christ working in us. We were dead in sin, but God made us alive together with Christ. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. We then know that we belong to God, becoming His people. He has broken down the dividing wall of hostility and is building us together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. Then, we are to know the love we have in Christ. Paul prays that believers would be strengthened by the Spirit, rooted in love and able to comprehend the immeasurable love of Christ.

Why are these foundations so important? Why must we know these truths and then live in the truth of them? Because we will never fully walk into what Jesus has called us to if we are ignorant of who we are. God desires for us to know Him, to love Him, to stay close to Him. This is intimate and relational. God reciprocates this to us as well. Yes we have much to do in obedience to Him, but His desire is that we know what He has accomplished for us, know who we are to Him, and then in that confidence, go and do His will. Jesus has made us worthy. Let us learn what this means and then walk in a manner worthy of our calling.

1. Have you ever wrestled with trying to understand your identity in Christ? How can you find truth regarding this?

2. Do you think God has good works for you to accomplish? What are some of those works now and for the future?

3. Read some of the powerful verses in Ephesians 1-3 and discuss them in the group, what they mean for us.
