A distinctive feature of Cornerstone is that it is a truly a multigenerational church family. A quick glance over the faces present at most gatherings will reveal a fair proportion of the over 60’s.
Although involved at almost every level of church life, the over 60’s meet together regularly for fellowship and encouragement in God’s Word. This group has been nicknamed “The Experienced Warriors”.
The “Experienced Warriors” meet at 9:30 a.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursday morning of each month.
As the name “Experienced Warriors” implies this group of saints have served our Lord faithfully for many years. Their enduring service is evident as the passage of the years, the battles fought and victories won, have together etched their mark on these dear faces. Yet, the “Experienced Warriors” so ably demonstrate the wonderful truth that an intimate relationship with Jesus transforms the “inner man” to become increasingly like our Lord and Saviour.
The words of Paul the apostle, to the Corinthian church, are so clearly modelled in the lives of our “Experienced Warriors”
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. (2Co 4:16)
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2Co 3:18)
The “Experienced Warriors” have a reputation in Cornerstone. Their love for the saints and for the lost and their commitment to payer is legendary. The love of those who have experienced hardships in life and who have found comfort in the presence of Jesus is such an encouragement to others who endure hardship of any sort. The value of the persistent prayers, cards of encouragement and plentiful hugs of the “Experienced Warriors”, showered so liberally on any in Cornerstone who are known to be in need, cannot be underestimated.
The interests and activities of the “Experienced Warriors” are varied and wide and often include church family members of all ages. One such example is the activities of the “Birders” and keen photographers who regularly do things together.
Many of our “Experienced Warriors” live in the various “retirement villages” in the area. Through their care for their friends and other residents many of Cornerstones retirees have found opportunities to witness and show the love of the Lord Jesus in practical ways. In this way a number of people who are not part of the Cornerstone Church family have been invited and have become regulars at the Thursday morning meetings.
The culmination, and perhaps highlight, of the “Experienced Warriors” year is the Christmas lunch. The Cornerstone elders, staff and “Life Team” take the greatest delight in preparing for and serving a sumptuous meal accompanied with all the Christmas trimmings. Live entertainment, by a team of talented Cornerstone musicians, has become a familiar feature of this event, much enjoyed whilst bringing to joyful conclusion the activities of the year.
